Links
The beginnings of a totally disorganized list of links to other sessions, summer music camps, music shops, violin shops, etc.
- Angelina Carberry and Martin Quinn
- We were lucky to have this duo in the area for a house concert in July 2008. I think I could listen to Angelina's solo CD every day for the rest of my life (and the banjo is not my favorite instrument). I also really enjoy their duo CD.
- Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection
- "The Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection is a historic compilation of 500 double jigs and reels from the repertoire of Paddy O'Brien of County Offaly, an All-Ireland accordion champion and one of the world's outstanding performers of Irish traditional music." I bought the collection years ago when it was only available on cassette. My brother "borrowed" it and I haven't seen it since. But, I had it long enough to learn some of the tunes, and can highly recommend it. If you enjoy unusual settings of tunes, you'll enjoy Paddy's beautiful collection. Also, check out Paddy's band, Chulrua.
- Donegal Fiddle Music « New »
- Learn more about Donegal fiddlers here: "We formed our organisation in the early 1980's to help support and promote the art of fiddle playing in the Donegal tradition. We operate as a not-for-profit voluntary organisation and we invest all of our income directly into our events, programmes, publications, projects and support for living artists. Our work is recognised by An Chomhairle Ealaíon/The Arts Council who provide vital financial support for our work."
- High Strung Violins and Guitars, 1116 Broad St., Durham, NC
- Our Lee (multi-talented fiddler, harpist, and dancer) owns this shop! Check it out—it's more than just a shop.
- Montgomery Violins, 509 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC
- A reliable source of violins, violas, etc., repairs, and accessories in Raleigh.
- PineCone
- In their own words: "PineCone, the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music, was formed in 1984 to honor the traditional music heritage that makes North Carolina unique."
- Carrboro Arts Center
- In their own words: "The ArtsCenter nourishes the arts, creativity and community through education, performance and exhibition." The Arts Center hosts many fine Irish trad concerts, so check their calendar frequently for what's happening.
- Patrick Sky & Cathy Sky
- They've moved to the mountains, but for many years their home in Chapel Hill was the cultural center of Irish music in NC. Pat's a piper who makes and sells pipes and is famous for his knowledge of reeds (they're ornery things) and his excellent Southern cooking. Cathy's a Clare-style fiddler and teacher who started many a student on the path of Erinomania. Their talents are too many to list here.
- Ossian USA
- A great source of traditional Irish CDs, tune collections, and more.
- Concertina.net
- Lots of interesting information about concertinas. In addition, home of the Tune-O-Tron, the ABC notation converter that I use to transform my ABCs into PDFs and MIDI files.
- Henrik Norbeck's Abc Tunes
- One of the best online ABC tune collections.
- Comhaltas
- Quoted from their website: "Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann is the largest group involved in the preservation and promotion of Irish traditional music. We’re a non-profit cultural movement with hundreds of local branches around the world, and as you can read in our history we’ve been working for the cause of Irish music since the middle of the last century (1951 to be precise)." Check out all the wonderful music resources, for example, this one.
- Irish Traditional Music Archive
- A "reference archive and resource centre for the traditional song, instrumental music and dance of Ireland." Check out the leaflets section for a wealth of useful information. Thanks to Cathy Sky for this link!
- Catskills Irish Arts Week, July 13-July 19, 2008
